Warm Up Your Brain

Let’s play a game before we start. Guess what is the meaning of 네요 ending in Korean lol.

네요 Ending in Korean Featured

-네요 Ending in Korean

-네요

[neyo]
No Translation

네요 is an unique conjugation that Korean grammar has. It describes what the speaker becomes aware at the moment. It replaces the ending such as 해요, 어요, 예요. There is no perfect translation of 네요 in English because English doesn’t have this grammatical function.

Native Koreans really often use it especially with weather or describe taste of food. It delivers an information what you become aware. Sometimes 네요 sounds like you’re talking to yourself without expecting response when you are with someone.

It’s Not Exclamation

A lot of Korean lessons actually teach 네요 is an exclamation. However, it’s not a 100% correct explanation. The National Institute of the Korean Language defines 네요 is an ending to describe what the speaker becomes aware now on the 해할 position (which is the position of 해요 ending).

How To Use

A: 날씨가 많이 춥네요
It’s very cold now right?
B: 그러게요
Yeah

A: 음식 어때요?
How is your food?
B: 맛있네요 ㅎㅎ
It’s good 🙂

A: 요즘 어떻게 지내요?
How have you been these days?
B: 너무 바쁘네요
I’ve been too busy

In An Indifferent Tone

네요 conjugation seems like an exclamation sometimes but also it sounds like ‘I’m listening but I really don’t care’ lol. This is why I really don’t teach 네요 is an exclamation. You have to be careful with your tone.

맛있네요
It’s delicious

$15, maybe it’s nothing that you can earn after a couple of hours of labor. Or, maybe you have to work for full days to earn it only because of where you were born.
