How To Say I’m Sick in Korean

아파요

[apayo]
I’m sick

Basic form : 아프다
반말(informal non-honorific) form : 아파
Negative form with 해요 speech style : 안아파요

I’m sick in Korean is ‘아파요’. You have to memorize 아파요. It’s super essential. Native Koreans often use 아파요 to describe some symptoms of illness instead of saying ‘I have some symptom’ such as ‘I have a headache’. This can help you to say any expressions for pain or sickness.

Hurt With 아파요

I’m hurt in Korean is also 아프다. Yes, in Korean common sense, being sick and being hurt are same. Korean language doesn’t separate the pain from illness and injury. You can use ‘아파요’ for any pain or illness.

발이 아파요
My feet hurts

How To Use It

A: 어디 아파요?
What’s wrong? (Where does it hurt?)
B: 머리가 아파요
I have a headache

A: 준씨, 괜찮아요?
Are you okay, Jun?
B: 나 진짜 아파요
I’m really sick

A: 많이 아파요?
Does It hurt too bad?
B: 지금은 좀 괜찮아요
I feel better a bit now

Painful

아파요 means ‘it hurts’ or ‘it’s painful’. Native Koreans really don’t say 고통스럽다 which literally means ‘painful’ because it sounds too serious or formal. If you still want to say ‘it’s painful’, then use an adverb that can mean ‘really’ or ‘very’ or ‘so much’ with 아파요 together.

아파요
It hurts

진짜 아파요
It really hurts = It’s painful

Vocabulary Note

어디 [eodi] : where
머리 [meori] : head
괜찮다 : to be fine / alright / okay
진짜 [jinjja] : really
많이 [mani] : a lot / many / much
지금 [jigeum] : now
좀 [jom] : a bit [adverb]
