What is -ㄹ게요 meaning in Korean

I will / I’m going to

Basic form : -ㄹ겠다
Informal non-honorific(반말) form : -기 어려워
Negative form : -기 안어려워요

 

ㄹ게요 is a future tense conjugation just like -ㄹ 거예요. ㄹ게요 shows a speaker’s promise or will to do something in future. HOWEVER, You should follow many conditions to use it correctly. I’ll teach you them in the order from the most important.

ㄹ게요 Ending Rules

❶ The first person (I) only can use. You can’t use it with other pronouns such as ‘you’, ‘she’.
❷ You can use it only when you talk to 2nd person directly about the task one of you must finish or what you are going to do.
❸ You can’t use it in a question form.
❹ It’s perfectly natural when someone asks you who will do a task or when you will do a task.
❺ Normally you can’t use it with 이다 verbs especially when the verb is used as ‘be + none’ or ‘be + adjective’.
❻ Unlike Korean future tense ㄹ 거예요 can be used for guessing, you can’t use it for guessing.

How To Use

A: 누가 설거지 할래요?
Who will wash dishes?
B: 제가 할게요
I’ll do it

 

A: 그럼 저는 좀 쉴게요
Then I’ll take a rest a bit
B: 알겠어요
OK

 

A: 제가 코로 물을 마셔볼게요
I’ll try to drink water with my nose
B: 그럼 맥주는 어때요?
Then, how about beer?

Misunderstanding of ㄹ게요 1

Many students misunderstand ㄹ게요 as a near future tense. Yes, It’s often used for near future in Korean conversations. However, According to The National Institute of the Korean Language, ㄹ게요 in Korean doesn’t have a grammatical function for near future tense.

Misunderstanding of ㄹ게요 2

Many students or even teachers are confused that ㄹ게요 is a variation of ㄹ거예요. According to The National Institute of the Korean Language, ㄹ게요 in Korean is an independant ending that is used in a colloquial style speech.
