It Tastes Bad in Korean

Hello everybody, it’s your Korean Teacher Jun. There are many ways to piss off other people and one of them is selling an awfully expensive but low quality food. Personally I consider this crap as a sin… 🙂 in Korean saying, 먹을 거 갖고 장난치지 마라 which means ‘don’t play with things to eat’. Yeah it’s a sin. So, that’s why we are going to learn its tastes bad in Korean to criticize all bad foods.

Warm Up Your Brain

If you eat some awful food then open your mouth, put your hand in your mouth and then wipe it out.

It Tastes Bad in Korean

맛없어요

[mad-eopseoyo]
It’s awful

Basic form : 맛(이) 없다
반말(informal non-honorific) form : 맛없어
Negative form with 해요 speech style : 안맛없어요

The negative form 안맛없어요 sounds a bit weird though. Because the opposite of 안맛없다 is 맛있다 (to be tasty)

맛없어요 is an exact opposite of 맛있다. 맛 means ‘taste’ in Korean and 없다 means ‘There isn’t’ or ‘Don’t have’ in Korean. So, 맛없다 literally means ‘it doesn’t have a taste’. I know it sounds a bit weird in English but that’s the way how Korean language speaks.

You must be careful with pronounciation because it doesn’t follow the pronounciation rule. 맛없다 is supposed to sound like [ma-seopda]. However, It actually sounds like [ma-deopda].

맛없어요 Can Be Rude

맛없어요 can be really really rude to use often. Try to use ‘별로예요’ instead. 별로예요 means ‘it’s not good’ or ‘Not interesting’. It sounds a bit cold but less rude than saying 맛없어요 straightly.

How To Use

A: 어때요?
How is it?
B: 맛없어요
It’s bad

A: 이거 맛없어요. 먹지마세요
It’s not good. Don’t eat it
B: 그래도 한번 먹어볼래요
I still want to try it though

비싸고 맛없는 음식은 죄악이다
Expensive but untasty food is a sin
– Quote style

Do You Like It? I Don’t Like It

When someone asks you if you like the food, then they would ask ‘맛있어요?’, literally means ‘does it taste good?’ in Korean. It’s same with ‘맛없어요’ too. Since the usage of ‘like’ in Korean is different, you must answer 맛없어요 if you don’t like it.

Vocabulary Note

이거 [igeo] : this [determiner]
-마세요 [maseyo] : don’t do –
그래도[gredo] : but
한번 [hanbeon] : once / one time
-보다 [boda] : try to –
비싸다 [bissada] : expensive
음식 [eumsik] : food
죄악 [joiak] : sin
