How To Say I’ve Been To in English

-에 가봤어요

[e gabwa-sseoyo]
I’ve been to –

Basic form : -에 가보다
반말(informal non-honorific) form : -에 가봤어
Negative form with 해요 speech style :  -에 안가봤어

The basic form of 가봤어요 is 가보다. I know I mentioned of it already but it’s very important to know because 가보다 is actually made of 2 different words. 가다 + 보다.

가다 means ‘go’ in Korean and 보다 means ‘watch / look / see’ in Korean. But when you attach 보다 to another word, it describes the experience or ‘try to do -’. So, 가보다 actually describes an experience to go to somewhere.

Postposition 에 (‘in, at, to’) can be dropped. Native Koreans often drop it in a casual conversation.

How To Say I’ve Been To in English

와봤어요

[wabwasseoyo]
I have been to (current place)

Basic form : -에 와보다
반말(informal non-honorific) form : -에 와봤어
Negative form with 해요 speech style :  -에 안와봤어

와보다 is the opposite of 가보다. It’s also made of 2 different words : 오다 which means ‘come’ and 보다 which is a word to describe an experience in this phrase.

Since ‘have been to’ uses a word ‘가다 (go)’, It obviously has another word that uses ‘오다 (come)’ right? It’s used when you tell or ask people in the place like ‘I have been here before’ or ‘Have you been here before?’

B: 지옥에 가봤어요?

With – 적

가/와본 적 있어요

[gabon jeok isseoyo]

I have been to –

It’s a same to 가봤어요 and 와봤어요. ~본 적 있어요 doesn’t make a big difference than ~봤어요. However, it loses the meaning of ‘try’ that the word 보다 has. So you can use 본 적 있다 to describes your experience to have been / have done.

Vocabulary Note

가다 [gada] : go
보다 [boda] : see / look / watch
오다 [oda] : come
터키 [teoki] : Turkey
한번 [hanbeon] : once

여기 [yeogi] : here
전에 [jeone] : before
친구들 [chingudeul] : friends
-랑 [rang] : with
