How To Say I Can Do It in Korean

할 수 있어요

[hal su isseoyo]
I can do it

Basic form : 할 수 있다
반말(informal non-honorific) form : 할 수 있어
Negative form with -해요 : 할 수 없어요

Korean language uses a special conjugation ㄹ 수 있다 for ‘can’. 하다 is ‘do’ in English or the most primary verb conjugation in Korean grammar. 할 수 있다 means ‘Can do it’ when you use 할 수 있다 alone without using any other object.

I Can Do It!

할 수 있다!

[hal su idda]
I can do it!

Native Koreans use -다 ending with this phrase often. -다 ending turns the sentence into exclamatory or talking to oneself. It’s not very polite to use to strangers or older persons than you. However, it’s a great phrase to encourage yourself.

Spacing

If you have ever seen ‘할 수 있어요’ before, then you might notice spacing is different every single time. 할수있어요, 할 수있어요, 할 수 있어요. Well, they are all same and grammatically correct.

How To Use

A: 누구 이거 할 줄 아시는 분 있어요?
Is there anyone who can do this?
B: 제가 할 수 있어요
I can do it

A: 준씨는 할 수 있어요!
You can do it Jun!
B: 라면 10개 먹기 도전!
Challenge to eat 10 ramen!

A: 이거 다 먹을 수 있어요?
Can you eat this all?
B: 네, 가능 ㅎㅎ
Yes, possible 🙂

I Can Do It With 해내다

해낼 수 있다

[henel su idda]
I can do it!

해낼 수 있다 is a combination of 2 words, 해내다 and ㄹ 수 있다. 해내다 is an unique Korean verb which means ‘achieve / success something difficult’. You can use it when your goal seems very hard or impossible to achieve. Normally 해낼 수 있다 is used alone itself.

할 수 없다 Meaning

할 수 없다 literally means ‘can’t’. However, native Koreans often say it when they accept something that they didn’t plan for or didn’t want. It’s very similar to ‘well… ’ in a disappointed tone.

A: 이미 늦었어요
We are late already
B: 그래요? 그럼 할 수 없죠
Are we? Well then…

Vocabulary Note

누구 [nugu] : who
이거 [igeo] : this [pronoun]
있다 [itdda] : to have / to be in a place
라면 [ramyeon] : ramen
먹다 [meokda] : to eat
도전 [dojeon] : challenge [noun]
다 [da] : all / every
네 [ne] : yes
가능 [ganeung] : possibility / possible
